14 July – 26 July
The Oxmarket Gallery will re-open with an exhibition of mixed media work in the John Rank Gallery. Nine artists will occupy the large, attractive gallery space with a variety of artworks in different media. They have named their show ‘Fresh Start’ to celebrate the relaxation of lockdown.
Returning to the Gallery are three local ceramicists and relief printmaker Caroline Shields. Caroline’s vivid stylised images celebrate the countryside. The potters, Rose Bates, Ollie Chappell and Diana Wren all enjoy making works in raku. Ollie also experiments with smoke firing. She says, “All my work in some way gets the smoke treatment.” Rose specialises in figurative work and pieces inspired by the garden. Diana by contrast has a taste for the gothic and surreal.
These artists will be joined by Sara Pitkeathly, a local painter whose inspiration is the sea and natural objects. Sue Hurhangee has wide interests and makes decorative pieces from fused glass, ceramics, and framed natural objects.
Vicky Swift makes beautiful sculptures of birds and natural objects from re-cycled cutlery, driftwood and found objects. Lorna Wright’s lovely jewellery is inspired by Ancient Egyptian designs which were popular with the Pharaohs. Lorna has adapted these to incorporate modern colours and beads.
Sue Meredith likes to focus on the often-unnoticed architecture of local streets, and assembles her hand drawn images into collages, making use of textured media, watercolour, pen and ink, and the occasional photograph, to achieve her final pieces.
This eclectic group of makers will be working together to give the public their first sight for many weeks of local artistic talent.
